Fritz & Hawley Guild Opticians stands as a beacon of quality and personalized service in an increasingly impersonal industry. Our approach is rooted in a blend of tradition and innovation. we are not just providing eye care; we are preserving a legacy of trusted vision.
Our history runs deep.
Fritz & Hawley has proudly served the New Haven County community for over 100 years. Established in 1900, Gustave Fritz and George Hawley created The Fritz & Hawley Company. After a 1920s fire, a major remodel made it the first air-conditioned retail store in the state by 1934. Following Gustave’s passing in 1935, George continued the legacy until Russell B. Fritz Sr. rejoined the business—paving the way for decades of growth.
Over the next 30 years, Fritz & Hawley expanded to include locations in Hamden, Milford, Branford, Stratford, and New Haven—making quality eye care more accessible across Southern Connecticut. From 1985 to 2018, Russell B. Fritz Jr. continued the family legacy, operating out of the Hamden location, the final remaining storefront.
In 2018, licensed optician Emmanuel "Manny" Colón became the new owner of Fritz & Hawley, beginning an exciting new chapter. Manny's dedication to introducing modern technology and expansive offerings brings a fresh approach to eyecare. Now, the shop can serve a new generation alongside honoring and preserving its rich history and legacy.
In 2025, we are proud to announce that Fritz & Hawley has returned to Chapel Street in New Haven. Our first shop opened there in 1900 and served the community until 1970—and now, over 50 years later, we’re coming back home. This expansion allows us to once again serve the New Haven community while continuing to care for our loyal customers in Hamden. The new location will compliment our existing Hamden shop, continuing the tradition of guild-level craftsmanship and personalized service.
